Several years ago, Nancy Hawley – a wonderful woman who will be missed – of Neighbourhood Concepts called Councillor Mary Fragedakis about turning the orphaned land at Cosburn and Donlands into a parkette for the community.
There have been many challenges along the way but with the help of WoodGreen Community Services and the East York Rotary Club. City staff from City Facilities and Real Estate, the Transportation Department and Parks Forestry and Recreation also helped make this parkette a reality.
Greening these orphan spaces on the City right of way is one more step in creating a more sustainable future. Sadly spaces like this can often end up full of garbage. We are all better served when instead they are full of nature’s enchantments.
It will also help our environment by fostering walkability. Getting out and going for a walk is good for the heart and good for the soul. To have a beautiful spot to go to makes that all the more likely.
Gathering places strengthen neighbourhoods. They bring communities together. This is the kind of important work the East York Rotary Club and WoodGreen and its local forerunner Community Care East York have been doing for decades. So this space will also serve as a tribute to all the great work of the East York Rotary Club.
