City Budget 2012 Public Consultation

The City of Toronto budget process has started.  All year long, we heard abCity Hallout a very large opening budget pressure that some mistakenly called a deficit.

That number has shrunk considerably and when you add in the expected surplus from this year and the Mayor’s proposed tax increase (2.5% residential and 0.83% non-residential),  the need for the proposed severe cutbacks to city services and programs would seem to disappear.

In that light, cuts, proposed in the recommended operating budgets,  to the TTC, child care, and community programs need to be re-evaluated.
That doesn’t mean we still don’t have to squeeze everything we can out of this budget to make sure that it is portioned out based on the priorities of Torontonians. So there is much work to do and many long nights analyzing numbers ahead.

You can find out more on the budget process here on the city website.

For those interested, deputations from the public to the Budget Committee can be made on December 7th.  To do so, please contact the Budget Committee at 416-392-1032 or 416-397-7768, or e-mail buc@toronto.ca no later than 4 p.m. on December 6, 2011.
