Toronto Strong Fund for the Victims of Danforth Shooting

TorontoStrong

Toronto Strong Danforth Fund by the Toronto Foundation

Recently, the Toronto Foundation established a Toronto Strong Fund campaign for the victims of the tragic shooting on the Danforth. This fund will allow those who want to express their support for our city and its citizens through philanthropic donations to do so in an accountable, transparent manner.

We all know that no act of philanthropy can address the loss faced by those whose loved ones have been killed or have sustained life changing injuries. But such acts of giving can provide a sense of community, a sense of action and a sense of comfort, while providing some financial relief.

These efforts demonstrate the kind of city we are, and the generosity and support of our residents, our corporate and non-profit partners, and people around the world who stand with us.

The entirety of donated funds will be distributed to the shooting victims through a process established following the April 23 van attack on Yonge Street and informed by models and best practices from around the world.

The Toronto Strong Fund is a partnership between the City of Toronto and Toronto Foundation, advised by a volunteer steering committee. Former Mayor Barbara Hall, who is acting as the pro bono Toronto Strong Fund Administrator, will stay on to allocate and distribute philanthropic donations to the victims of the shooting on the Danforth. The Fund will also be coordinating with existing community-led fundraising initiatives and GoFundMe to look for opportunities to collaborate and unite in an effort to provide city-wide support for victims.

While the #TorontoStrong Fund will distribute funds to shooting victims, the impact of these events goes much further. And so, in addition to coordinating the collection and distribution of donations, the Toronto Strong Fund is working to aggregate existing support mechanisms for those affected by major violent events, and identify gaps and make recommendations for future efforts to combat violence and support local communities.

Donations can be made to the #TorontoStrongDanforth Fund online at torontofoundation.ca/torontostrong or by cheque.

You can also text-to-donate through the Mobile Giving Foundation Canada. Text TORONTO to 80100 donate $5, $10, $20 or $25.

The Fund will be partnering with Islamic Relief Canada and Dawanet to ensure that the funds raised through their joint effort  will flow through this coordinated campaign to support the victims.
