Statement on Events on TTC during the week starting January 29th, 2018

You might have been affected by the unplanned service disruptions on the TTC during the work week starting January 29th.   As a TTC Commissioner, I found that series of events quite disturbing and I wrote my fellow TTC Commissioners asking that we set aside time to review what happened and take measures to ensure there is not a reoccurrence.

You can find my letter to my fellow TTC Commissioners online here.

TTC staff did send out messages explaining what happened to our customers and to the general public. These were helpful but given the gravity of the situation much more needs to be done. One of the key issues for me are the safety issues posed by extreme overcrowding at our Yonge and St. George stations. We need to take immediate steps to review the contingency plans for those stations and work with Toronto Fire, the Toronto Police Service and EMS to improve them. So, I moved a successful motion at the TTC to get that kind of a review done.

Sadly, the TTC is one of the least-subsidized major transit systems in North America. Consequently, we ask a lot of our staff and customers.

That said, I will continue to push for critical safety enhancements and improvements and increases to TTC service.

Working for you,
